Functional Brain Assessment
What is a Functional Brain Assessment?
The Functional Brain Assessment combines a qEEG with a battery of visual, vestibular and cognitive tests. This can identify problems with brain function that are not detected by MRI or other medical tests.
This can provide an excellent snapshot of your current brain function as compared to age- and sex-matched population averages.
How does it work?
The quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) is an advanced assessment tool that measures the electrical activity produced in the brain. This identifies imbalances in brain function, usually described in terms of too much or too little of a specific frequency being generated in a specific area of the brain. Imbalances in symmetry, coherence and other parameters of brain function are also identified. Read more about it here.
Many different brain disorders create specific changes in the brain, and the qEEG is an objective measure of these changes. Specific qEEG patterns have been seen in Alzheimer’s, stroke, Parkinson’s, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), epilepsy, anxiety and depression. They have also been seen in post-concussion syndrome, along with the associated chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that are seen in the Polytrauma Clinical Triad.
Who is eligible?
This baseline test can be useful for comparison with future test results, allowing for the accurate identification of changes over time in people who:
Are at risk of concussion due to work-related exposures, participation in contact sports, motor vehicle accidents or other high-risk activities
Are considering a course of rehabilitation treatment, neurofeedback, tDCS or other therapy whose goal is to improve brain function
Are concerned about their memory, concentration and cognitive performance, and want to monitor their brain function to identify any subtle decline that may occur over several years
The FBA can also provide important insights, and may guide treatment decisions, for people suffering from a variety of chronic diseases that can affect brain function. These include:
- Post-Concussion Syndrome
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Age-Associated Memory Impairment
- Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia from several causes
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
- Depression and Anxiety disorders
What does it include?
Your FBA will include:
A comprehensive clinical intake to document your entire medical history, including prior injuries, infections and trauma may be relevant
A brief introduction to qEEG assessment and neurofeedback
Application of scalp qEEG electrodes (totally painless)
Recording of two independent sets of brainwave data (eyes-open and eyes-closed)
A screening test for problems with brain-related visual and vestibular function
A Computerized Cognitive Test panel to identify current cognitive impairment
A summary and interpretation of your results by an experienced integrative MD with recommendations for treatment and self-care
Your qEEG results will be interpreted by an international expert and will include a recommended neurofeedback treatment protocol that can be used by any local provider. A printed report will be explained to you personally by an integrative MD. This will include recommendations for treatment.
